Thomas E. Watson (1856-1922) and the Populist Party

The Populist party was a union of farmers that wanted laws in their favor. Tom Watson was the leader of this party, but he switched between it and the Democratic party whenever possible to stay in office. He knew disregarding racist views would lead to better lives for farmers.

-New Populist Bill in Congress-

While congress was in session today, Tom Watson, a member of the newfound Populist party, proposed a bill that is being taken into further consideration. The bill, called the rural free delivery bill, would require mail services to deliver to everyone for no extra charge. This would not only let Populists help farmers, but it would also be great for the Populist belief that more communication and transportation services should be a priority of the government. For the bill to be effective, many more roads would have to be built in rural areas. Tom Watson hopes the bill will also gain support from his main voting body,, southern farmers.
